With over 45 years of fly fishing experience and teaching fly fishing in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska since 1984, Conway will get the job done right. Tell Mark what you want in your trip experience and he and Maryna will put together an awesome package fit just for you.
"At the price you'll pay today for a good fly fishing guide in Alaska, make sure they have a solid experience in the area of Alaska you wish to fly fish. Just as important to us, we hope that your Alaska fly fishing guide possesses excellent personal and professional performance skills with special attention to your own fly fishing abilities," Conway says.
Helpful hints finding a good Alaskan fly fishing guide
Ask to speak with your guide, asking good questions of what you might expect of your fly fishing guide before you book your trip to Alaska. If you are going through a booking agent, be careful what you are getting into. Make sure you can speak to your guide or the head guide of your lodge these important questions before booking an expensive trip with them:
Ask your guide about what species of fish are available when you would like to plan to visit Alaska; when is the best time to target a specific species of fish you are interested in fly fishing for, example, best time for Grayling or Dolly Varden.
Have the guide describe fly fishing techniques they plan to have you use, what fly patterns will they use and which patterns do they recommend you to tie if you want to bring your own flies.
Do they supply fly fishing tackle if so how long are their rods and what fly line weight are they rated for, what types of fly lines they plan to use and what do they recommend if you bring your own, what leader length & what tippet sizes they recommend, can you use dropper flies and what dry and wet flies will they plan to use, will you swing streamer patterns or high stick nymph, use strike indicators... just a few good questions to ask an experienced fly fishing guide in Alaska. This will help you determine their skills and abilities as a fly fishing guide in Alaska by the answers they give you.
With these great questions, you can't go wrong finding the right guide and service for you.
We promote challenging sport fly fishing techniques based on proven learned presentation techniques of our flies in the Alaskan waters we fish that entice a specific fish to strike. Our flies are presented in a technique that entices the fish's decision to strike and not manipulation of the fisher in any forced or pressured method. Simply put, only natural purist presentations of a fly are used to produce a fish strike. Expect the fish you are fly fishing for to strike one of our proven Alaskan flies aggressively out of anger, hunger or just plain madness.
Alaska Fly Fishing Adventures' techniques do not attempt to snag, floss or in anyway manipulate the fish's decision to strike our properly fished fly lure, which never includes any illegal techniques such as snagging Salmon or Trout with the Kenai Twitch, Kenai Jerk or Kenai Snag and Drag. These are illegal methods of fish molestation used by many fisherman in Alaska including some inexperienced Alaska fly fishing guides in some rivers and streams through out South Central Alaska.
Alaska Fly Fishing Adventures only uses purist fly fishing techniques that are Tried and True by Mark Conway and other purist fly fishing guides.
**We hear each year from people coming to Alaska for the first time to fish on their own, sad but true stories of failure to catch fish. I meet people on the river banks and streams who come up to me and my clients while we are fly fishing asking us," what are you using to catch your fish so easily?" They say,"I've been a fly fisherman in the lower 48 for "so many" years and nothing I'm using or doing seems to be working for me. I've been here for a week now and haven't caught a fish. Can you help me?"
Unfortunately, unless I'm guiding you, I can't suggest anything other than, "hire a good fly fishing guide for a day and find out for yourself." Often times I will give them one of my own hand tied original flies and that's all they need to change their luck, depending on their fly fishing skills. We get fly fishers of all levels of skill from all over the world fly fishing with us and they are amazed at how different it is fly fishing in Alaska.
